BEYOND THE BEER

Ever wondered who’s behind your brews? Our staff, although small, is mighty. Here’s a glimpse into their lives beyond the beer they brew, pour, and enjoy.

Q: “If you were on a desert island and you only had one type of beer to drink for the rest of your life, what would it be?”

A: “I would just be concerned about drinking water, but something definitely of the light and crispy variety, a pilsner preferably.”

Fun Fact: Ted can brew beer one-handed

I’m originally from Michigan and attended college at Western State in Gunnison, graduating with a double major in environmental science and business and a minor in biology. I found Salida because my darling wife grew up here. We met in college and got married a couple of years ago. We enjoy spending time with our dogs Jasmine and Kachina, disc golfing, fishing, and snowboarding. When I’m not drinking or making beer, you’ll likely find me fishing with a pilsner not too far out of reach.

My advice to someone who would be interested in pursuing the brewery life is to prepare for all the cleaning that takes place. Elevation is where I learned to be a brewer, going on five years now. I’ve considered myself a beer enthusiast my whole life, I just can’t get enough of those pumps and valves. 😉

Beyond the beerish pleasures of life, I love working with my hands. Woodworking is a passion of mine where I can be creative and free to make mistakes, with this medium it’s considered, “character”. I’ve made my wife her engagement ring box, cutting boards, coasters, trays, croquet mallets, and fly rod accessories.

Q: “Where in the beer-making process do you nerd out the most?”

A: “Mashing for sure. This is when the hot water steeping process hydrates the barley, activates the malt enzymes, and converts the grain starches into fermentable sugars. It’s super important to monitor the mash temperatures very closely. When you mash in, it spells out how the brew is going to go.”
